Book Club

The Spiritual Gangsta Book Club is where we link up online (Twitter) to read and discuss the reading. Shannon also sends a follow up email after each reading to help integrate the reading and discussions. Join the Spiritual Gangsta Community.

These are the recorded sessions of the book club. Twitter removes them after 30 days so Shannon will be recording them and making the links available for you to listen to them at your leisure.

Book 1 – The Power of Now – Eckhart Tolle

Years ago, when I first read this book, I couldn’t grasp what he was speaking about, enlightenment, and now, the introduction speaks massive resonance to me. He says, “I can not tell you what you don’t already know what is within you,” and we all can feel that, right? When something is true, you can feel it within.

Series 1 Week 1
What is Enlightenment?

In our first session, we got everyone familiar with the simple workings of Twitter Spaces. We began with reading parts of the introduction, learning about Ekhart’s experience and how he came about writing The Power of Now. Then, we continued to Chapter 1, finishing up on page 14.

Series 1 Week 3

This past Sunday during book club, we discussed the relation to emotions and the reaction our body has to them. Eckhart says it is important for us to make a habit of asking ourselves what is going on inside us.

“The intensity of pain depends on the degree of resistance to the present moment, and in turn depends on the degree of resistance to the present moment, and this in turn depends on how strongly you are identified with your mind.” Page 33

We continued to read on page 25 where we left off and finished up on page 36.

Series 1 Week 4

“What are you defending? An illusory identity, an image in your mind, a fictitious entity. By making this pattern conscious, by witnessing it, you disidentify from it. In the light of your consciousness, the unconscious pattern will quickly resolve.” Page 45. We continued to read on page 36 where we left off and finished up on page 46.

Series 1 Week 5

Eckhart spoke about how one becomes attached to the egos needs. How we come to self-identify with these things, the past creating us into identifying ourselves to it so deeply we have a hard time disassociating from it. How been attached to time also causes us to be stuck living in the illusions of the past or the future. Has this happened to you? Do you have a story from your past you always speak about? Do you feel attached to the story, like it is a part of yourself?

Series 1 Week 7

In this chapter we learned a deep unsettled comfort of Being with ourselves, Being at Peace within, causes a similar external experience. We need to learn to become at peace within so we can experience more peace in our external world. We learn to become the observer of the inner emotional system and move in a neutral position; in to the Now. Eckhart also said Unhappiness spreads more easily than a physical disease.

“The pollution of the planet is only an outward reflection of an inner psychic pollution: millions of unconcious individuals not taking responsibility for their inner space.” page 78

Series 1 Week 8

This week we completed chapter 5. “It’s not what you think it is. You can’t think about presence and the mind can’t understand it. Understanding presence is being present.”
