Book Club

The Spiritual Gangsta Book Club is where we link up online (Twitter) to read and discuss the reading. Shannon also sends a follow up email after each reading to help integrate the reading and discussions. Join the Spiritual Gangsta Community.

These are the recorded sessions of the book club (click the weekly title and it will take you to the recording). Twitter removes them after 30 days so Shannon will be recording them and making the links available for you to listen to them at your leisure.

Book 1 – The Power of Now – Eckhart Tolle

Years ago, when I first read this book, I couldn’t grasp what he was speaking about, enlightenment, and now, the introduction speaks massive resonance to me. He says, “I can not tell you what you don’t already know what is within you,” and we all can feel that, right? When something is true, you can feel it within.

Series 1 Week 3

This past Sunday during book club, we discussed the relation to emotions and the reaction our body has to them. Eckhart says it is important for us to make a habit of asking ourselves what is going on inside us.

“The intensity of pain depends on the degree of resistance to the present moment, and in turn depends on the degree of resistance to the present moment, and this in turn depends on how strongly you are identified with your mind.” Page 33

We continued to read on page 25 where we left off and finished up on page 36.

Series 1 Week 4

“What are you defending? An illusory identity, an image in your mind, a fictitious entity. By making this pattern conscious, by witnessing it, you disidentify from it. In the light of your consciousness, the unconscious pattern will quickly resolve.” Page 45. We continued to read on page 36 where we left off and finished up on page 46.

Series 1 Week 5

Eckhart spoke about how one becomes attached to the egos needs. How we come to self-identify with these things, the past creating us into identifying ourselves to it so deeply we have a hard time disassociating from it. How been attached to time also causes us to be stuck living in the illusions of the past or the future. Has this happened to you? Do you have a story from your past you always speak about? Do you feel attached to the story, like it is a part of yourself?

Series 1 Week 7

In this chapter we learned a deep unsettled comfort of Being with ourselves, Being at Peace within, causes a similar external experience. We need to learn to become at peace within so we can experience more peace in our external world. We learn to become the observer of the inner emotional system and move in a neutral position; in to the Now. Eckhart also said Unhappiness spreads more easily than a physical disease.

“The pollution of the planet is only an outward reflection of an inner psychic pollution: millions of unconcious individuals not taking responsibility for their inner space.” page 78

Series 1 Week 12

During this session we discussed moving from addictive to enlightened relationships. Understanding love isn’t selective and true love is within us. Its not until we begin to look at relationships as a Spiritual Practice we will be stuck in a negative mind. When we begin to release the egoic mind and step into the consciousness then we will be able to release the madness, the dysfunction, the pain body because the ego and consciousness can not live together.

Series 1 Week 13

We went deeper into the feminine pain-body and learned how the feminine can allow herself to become present during the times of discomfort to transmute the pain and allow herself to come into the Now.

We also learned why it is important for us to come into peace with ourselves regardless of having a relationship or not. We don’t need a relationship for happiness although even as we come to peace within we still may feel a pull within for a relationship.

Series 1 Week 14

Eckhart says what they fear and resist most is the end of their drama. As long as they are their mind, what they fear and resist the most is their own awakening. And I find this so relevant in many people who begin their awakening and get scared and turn away because the attachment to drama or the attachment to our old selves is easier than learning to be a new self.

Series 1 Week 15

This section brings about the acknowledgement that the World is going through a “birth” but i like to see it as an awakening. Although the World is going through this awakening, it is important for us to understand it is not our duty to push consciousness onto others. They have their own journey to ride out.
