Not all Cupping Therapy is Created Equal

As excited I am about all the craze Michael Phelps has created for Cupping Therapy I cant help but also have my awareness heightened. Obviously, there is an increase of inquiry of the therapy which causes a number of people rushing out to “learn” the skill quickly. This causes concern, because people are watching quick you tube videos, or reading an article and then placing cups on people with out proper knowledge and skill. Just like massage therapy, one should have good training prior to performing on the public.

Anyone seeking cupping therapy should keep in mind to ask about the practitioners education and training prior to having the service performed.

Let’s get some background info first… What exactly is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping Therapy comes from Chinese Medicine as far back as 3500 years. They believe the body contains different Meridians, which connect to certain parts of the body. When one goes to see the “Dr” they would place cups along the effected Meridians to increase the “Qi/Chi” or energy flow in that Meridian to help the person. This type of cupping therapy is mostly done on the back. Glass cups are “heated” with a flame to create a suction and  applied to the body. The cups are usually left on the body for upwards of 15 minutes. Leaving the cups on the body for this length of time is guaranteed to leave marks on the body. Although, if you have an issue in your muscles…. it will mark no matter how long the cup is on the body.

By creating an upwards suction, it triggers the lymphatic system to activate, helping to remove toxins deep in the muscles. This also, helps clear the blood vessels, stretches and activates the skin. New advancements in technology and materials have been integrated with cupping therapies and its uses now range for many different treatments and applications. Applying cupping therapy with massage therapy opens up a huge increase of of improved healing.

A little about me and what type of Cupping Therapy I love!

During my years practicing Massage Therapy I have come across many therapies that are very helpful with healing the body. My favorite and most requested therapy is MediCupping. I am certified in Massage & MediCupping from A.C.E.I have had over 80 hours in hands on training with some of the top teachers in the Cupping world. I have been performing Massage & MediCupping for over a combined 5 years

I began my Cupping journey with Massage Cupping and quickly fell in love. Creating a suction by a hand pump with plastic cups instead of the use of fire felt a lot safer for me and my clients! I could picture the possibilities of disaster with me and fire! (No thanks!)

As a Massage Therapist, I don’t leave a cup stationary for longer than 3 minutes, because if I do, I start to cross over into Chinese Medicine, which is not within my scope of practice. Plus, leaving a cup in 1 area for that length of time you are guaranteed to mark the body and flood the lymphatic system.

My training is to help open the lymphatic system so it can drain the built up fluid and toxins contributing to pain. This is why I consistently “massage” with the cups. Still after 5 years, I don’t think I have ever left a cup stationary for more than half a minute. It just hasn’t been necessary. I love using the cups in the beginning of a massage session to allow the increased blood flow to relax the upper layers of the muscles. This technique lets me get in deeper  and “see” where issues are actually coming from, allowing for a more effective massage session.

After mastering Massage Cupping, I moved on to learn VaccuTherapy, aka MediCupping, from the same company. MediCupping Therapy is, by far, my favorite therapy. I have seen tremendous results in my clients after 1 session of MediCupping and those who have had regular treatments have done complete transformations in their health.

Changes in C-Section scars, shoulder joint mobility, abdominal bloat, recovery from surgical procedures, and even detoxification from years of smoking are a few of the issues I have seen my clients gain positive results from.

Another benefit of having Medicupping is the size of the cups, the cups range from as small as a pencil head to as large as, well, I can fit a butt cheek in there! Perfect for sciatic issues! I can perform the cupping on hands, feet, & even the face with some of my tiniest cups. Those who are having issues in these areas can experience MediCupping and feel results in as little as 1 session. The gentle, yet effective, therapy wont leave marks on your face either.
